Remedios, Cuba 24 December 2008. It’s Christmas Eve and the 18 thousand souls of Remedios, a small town in the province of Villa Clara, celebrate their night of madness. It’s Las Parrandas feast that, according to an ancient tradition, was founded in 1820 by the priest of the country to encourage citizens to attend the mass. Since then, the bells of the church in Central Plaza Isabel II announce the start of the festivities, where sagrado y profano are mixed together.
Above long and precarious wooden pallets thousands of fireworks are launched into the air and relentlessly bombarding the starry sky of Cuba, creating evocative play of light and color, while a blanket of fog smoke saturated the air. During the passionate challenges around districts between groups that organized fireworks, a deafening of shouts, laughter, and rum is chasing in the streets of neighborhoods throughout the night until the morning light brings back the calm and silence. |
