| Sandro Di Camillo / Berlin Babylon |
Work selected from "G.Tabò" Award
Berlin is traditionally a place of experimentation. Its urban structure itself, result from a series of architectural interventions, often inconsistent with each other, is not an exception. Elusive, not classificable, in perpetual becoming, like the Calvino’s Berenice, Berlin "is a sequence over time of different cities enveloped one inside the other, pressed close" (Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities).
In Berlin Babylon, the references to the conventions attributed to the photographic medium are cancelled, first of all the documentary requirements. It’s a survey on time and space, the answer is the immense amount of visual material produced and consumed daily by the company.
In any view overlap multiple images that the mind is free to seek and recognize, identifying layers, giving substance to appearances, at first sight, transparent. It is a process that confuses and intrigues, which has room for imagination. Hence the impossibility of a rational rule of the places covered: you can feel the physical space but do not fully recognize. The landscape becomes, then, something abstract and elusive. The indistinct spaces become the stage where human presence float, almost imperceptible. In this complex space system, the dimension of time loses all solution of continuous, and man lose control.
