| Marco Barbon / Asmara Dream |
Asmara Dream is born of a desire to evoke through images of urban details, objects, interiors and portraits, the characteristic atmosphere of Asmara, Eritrea’s capital city. Realized between 2006 and 2008 with a Polaroid 690 camera, this work suggests the idea of a suspension of time and history, between a colonial past which has deeply marked the town and a present which seems to be frozen in a never-ending wait. The result gives the impression of a dream, hence the title of the series.
A dream is, in a way, an interruption, a tear in the plot of time. In a dream everything seems to have another rhythm, to flow differently. Objects and persons are more aerial, more tenuous, and more abstract, as if suspended in a timeless limbo. The same impression strikes the visitor of Asmara at each step: a bar counter, the façade of a building, an old man reading a newspaper, a chandelier, a shop board – in the face of this we are left to wonder what age we are in, whether in the present or in some hidden place in our memory. |
