At 3:32 am on Monday, April 6, 2009 an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale struck Abruzzo region and central Italy, causing the deaths of at least 298 people, injuries of others 1600 people and leaving about 65,000 residents deprived of their homes, as well as a total loss estimated at 3.500.000.000 €. It is the most serious seismic event in the country since the earthquake in Irpinia in 1980.
While the government is launching the so-called Decree Abruzzo, containing measures to deal with the earthquake emergency, Prosecutor of L’Aquila opens investigation against unknown persons on charges of culpable homicide and disaster in order to determine the composition of materials used in the construction of houses, including the suspected use of marine sand for the production of reinforced concrete.
