Collettivo Kameraphoto / A state of affairs |
In the coming month of July, between the 20th and the 26th, the 13 photographers belonging to the colective wish to work in a daily newspaper, in 13 cities in the world, alongside the reporter that covers daily news. We believe the chance afforded by working next to who knows and documents their daily reality to be of added importance in the understanding of events. This underlines our belief in the importance of local and specialized media as fundamental pillars of a free press. We all consume reporting that is edited, broadcast and printed by current hegemonic models of mass communications which are aligned with the interests of global media groups. The underlying motivation of this project lies in the 13 member’s desire to address local issues, as defined by those know and live them, having shed previous expectations, notions and pre-conceived images. With this project we would like to propose an alternative and comparative vision, which we believe will be closer to the preoccupations and problems of the local population. We wish to question how daily events are edited and how they are represented visually. We are interested in establishing a debate between local and global.
Looking at a world map, we elected the cities of New Orleans, São Paulo, Istambul, Luanda, Johannesburg, Moscow, Reykjavik, Beirut, Bangalore, Havana, Taipei and the Cayman Islands. All of these locations are at the heart of a new political definition of economical and social strategies.

Collective Kameraphoto
Founded in January 2003, [kameraphoto] was the coming together of a very diverse group of photographers. It was born of the need to create a strucuture, in Portugal, that would foster, distribute and represent the work of freelance photographers. [kameraphoto] pushes its members to work on personal projects and protects their rights as independent authors. Currently, our 13 members are:
Alexandre Almeida, Augusto Brázio, Céu Guarda, Guillaume Pazat, João Pina, Jordi Burch, Martim Ramos, Nelson d’Aires, Pauliana Valente Pimentel, Pedro Letria, Rui Xavier, Sandra Rocha e Valter Vinagre.
From its inception, [kameraphoto] has been receptive to all photographers whose work testifies to a high degree of commitment, both humanly and photographically, towards their chosen themes. [kameraphoto] provides an ample platform for multiple visions and perceptions of the world, expressed plurally through photography. |
