DOWN THERE
The Reeperbahn is the famous red light district in the heart of Hamburg, where life takes place inside the ends of the primitive instincts of man. Alcohol, sex, fast money, loneliness, weakness, violence reigns supreme law of the district, but the neighborhood is changing. The famous red light district is turning into a living museum, where tourists looking for the magic of old times and the politicians are pushing for a modern future. The Business is not done more with the sale of fun and rocking. The sailor is gone, sex is now also the Internet, television and telephone, the taste of freedom is no longer a lifestyle choice. The old bars and clubs are going out slowly and their characters more distinctive and unique atmosphere.
You can still find the magic and flavor of yesteryear, the latest sex comedy still has its doors open to a curious audience. A few bars of surviving 50 years ago and there is still one or the other soul, perhaps you can still tell the legendary stories of the past, between truth and exaggeration. The charm has remained, living lives of extreme and prohibited the past into the present. Live immersed in the here and now: millionari were yesterday, today you can not buy their beer and their cigarettes. Their loneliness brings them to share their decadence with silence.
With my pictures I want to document the end of an era. Discover what remains of these lives and busts of past glories, to show the humanity and the individual inside this hidden world and often deplored by society, but at the same time used and exploited by all.
I see very fragile characters that carry the weight of real life.Listening destinies and disappointments that resemble each other, sniff the hopes of the great freedom and great luck, and I understand that no one asks and expects nothing more from the world, from himself and from life. FAmong leisure drunk, amazing stories and endless nights the only thing I have never lost is pride.
There is a fascinating world on the edge of unbearable, but so human, open to everyone, but mostly just a few: screw held in chiaroscuro, always present but fragile because they are the only ones left, the next generation. Not to lose their memory of a historic place I try to capture this atmosphere, collect their faces and their stories. The Reeperbahn is part of the identity and history of the city. My photo collection into a photo book give back space to the past helps us understand our present. Our world is fast trying to destroy the little nuances that makes life interesting. Looking into the eyes and lives of others teaches us to respect and live with pride, even our small company.
This project is still in process and should be finalized by this year with the completion of a book. |
