Documentary Practice and narrative: a long-term job

The seminar will address issues and practical approaches to contemporary documentary photography, focusing on long-term photographic project. The aim is to promote understanding of different forms of narrative and different ways of structuring work according to the final presentation, be it a book, an exhibition, a multimedia work or magazine. the discussion will be on how the ideas and concepts are crucial to the development of the documentary project, how to identify themes, patterns and topics that concern and wonder about the society we live in, both locally and globally.Participants will complete projects and ongoing development in order to work on those, deconstructing the images and methodology of work, including a detailed work on the editing process. As illustrated guide will be used for projects other than those photographers teacher, facilitating the understanding of work processes and the evolution of the project.

Methods

Each participant must bring one or several projects selected by their work and must be prepared to discuss their goals with the group.
The course includes the participation of up to 20 students
Participation will be selected by teachers.

Biography

George Georgiou was born in London to parents greek Cypriots. He photographed a long time in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Turkey, living and working in Serbia, Greece and for the last four years in Istanbul.
His work has centered on the identity of people and shooting people in their communities, cultures and ideologies.
The awards he received include two World Press Photo in 2003 and 2005 and a Nikon UK Press Award for best photo essay in 2000 from September 2008 is represented in Italy, the agency Prospekt.

Vanessa Winship was born in Britain.
After graduating with honors in photography, film and video at the Polytechnic of Central London, started working as an independent photographer. In 2005 entered in the agency VU in Paris and, since 2009, his photographs are exhibited in galleries Agency in Paris.
Vanessa has lived and worked in the Balkans and in Turkey for almost ten years and currently lives and works in Great Britain.
The subjects of her most cherished are the concepts of border land, desire, identity, memory and history, and how the stories related to them are addressed and narrated.
His photography explores the points of contact between the news and fiction, both filtered by his imaginative world and accompanied by texts that she calls the memory test.
His work is internationally recognized. He won two awards at World Press Photo, the first in 1998 and the last in 2008.
He received an honorable mention in 2003 by Oskar Barnack Award for his "Albanian Landscape" and was a finalist for the same award in 2008 for his work on the Black Sea, "The Black Sea."
